WEST (West End Safety Trial)

From 25 November 2011 until the end of May 2012, State Government and Adelaide City Council will trial some initiatives in the city’s north-west (map here).  These initiatives are expected to improve the amenity and safety of the West End precinct, so:

  • People know where to wait for late night buses or taxis, can get to them hassle free, and see public transport as a convenient and safe option for getting home after a night out.
  • The city, especially the West End, is the place to go to have a good time, is an enjoyable place to be and has a great vibe.
  • There is a greater choice of activities for all ages in the West End, for young and old and everyone in between.
  • All venues in the West End are pleasant, welcoming, care for their patrons and their precinct, and licensing supports city vibrancy and city safety.
  • Social services are coordinated and organised so that police time is freed up to spend more time on the streets, and anyone at risk is supported and cared for.
  • Everyone knows how to party smart, have a good time, and get home safely.

By trialling ideas or new approaches, agencies will be able to test the waters, evaluate outcomes and seek public opinion before investing more resources.  An overview of the initiatives can be found here (917kb).

Discussions with some stakeholders are already underway. Evaluation of the WEST initiatives will allow informed decisions to be made about longer term strategies and programs.
