Adelaide west End Association

Andrew says ....

Welcome to the first of our new look newsletters!

It's a very interesting and challenging time to be writing this. The West End precinct stands at the threshold of significant change, the relocation of the Royal Adelaide Hospital (RAH), the construction of the South Australian Health and Medical Research Institute (SAHMRI), the proposed relocation of the Adelaide Casino and redevelopment of the Torrens riverside and the continued expansion of the UniSA City West campus represent an unprecedented level of development in the north west corner of the city.

The Adelaide West End Association is committed to ensuring that the voice of our community is heard (and listened to), to ensure that the diverse nature of our precinct is maintained, and that opportunities for further enrichment exist for local business to thrive are built upon the distinctive nature of our part of the city.

One thing is certain: this part of the city is going to change and these changes will affect your business and our community as a whole. Over the next few months there will a number of opportunities to become more involved in the AWEA to have your say and contribute to the future vitality of our community, stay tuned to our website for further details.

Andrew Wallace, President AWEA

Higher Ground's West End Mural

The West End Mural is almost complete. The lead artists are Bob Daly and Kalyna Micenko (pictured), both of whom are highly experienced professional artists who have worked extensively on community art projects, as well as commissions for individual events, and are recipients of numerous awards.

The mural is a representation of the West End as it was, is and could be! Although the mural is representative of the West End as a precinct, it aims to focus and celebrate the creative energy and output of the locality, and harness our collective artistic and creative spirits. The unveiling of the mural will take place on Saturday 7th August from 6pm, visit www.higherground.org.au for more information.

ArtWest Wrap up

With the onset of winter, Adelaide's West End again showcased the innovative work of the next generation of artists and designers through its ArtWest festival. The program was as varied as the variety of practices explored by our creative community including; sculpture, photography, painting installation, garment design, furniture, drawing and printmaking.

Curated by Brigid Noone the festival exhibited the work of over 30 artists in 22 venues around the West End of Adelaide. Vacant spaces, shop windows and traders walls and floors became temporary gallery spaces for works from students at Art Architecture & Design at UniSA, Adelaide College of the Arts,TAFE Adelaide and selected emerging artists.

One of the many highlights was Daniel Connell's extraordinary drawings of Punjabi taxi drivers in Adelaide. These five 3m x 1.75m drawings were exhibited in the courtyard of the UniSA City West campus and attracted considerable interest with interest expressed from Sydney and San Francisco to display the works.

Daniel a significant emerging artist, commented that "Art West was a Gift". He further noted: "that the Subjects themselves , the taxi drivers, have felt welcomed, celebrated and acknowledged as part of the community of Adelaide and SA."

ArtWest exposes to the general public what we in the west sometimes take for granted, we are the centre for art and design education in the state and we are a remarkable creative community.

The Adelaide West association would like to thanks Brigid, the artists, the venues for again making this event a success. We would also like to thank our sponsors; Adelaide City Council, BBX, dB Magazine, McDonalds West Terrace and The Worldsend hotel for their continued support of ArtWest.

dB Magazine Celebrates 500 Issues

For nearly twenty years the dB Magazine office has been located upstairs on the west end of Hindley Street, an ideal location to see and comment upon that which keeps the city ticking. Publishing each and every fortnight (and weekly at Festival time), we're about to hit our 500th issue, and the more things change the more they stay the same. In 1991 we'd just had the recession we had to have and the local music industry was in the doldrums. In 2010 we've just had the GFC we had to have and the local music industry is, well…

Some things change, and for the better, and we've been part of that change, too. When dB Magazine began publishing, few things in the West End were as they are now, and though progress is slow it is wonderful to see change and growth being embraced by the locale which is all too often written off as nothing more than the 'entertainment precinct'.

IVC

Twenty years ago there was no UniSA campus, the Fringe occupied the site of the old Fowlers buildings; there was no Adelaide Symphony Orchestra in the wonderful Grainger Studios; there was no ArtsSA in the magnificently refurbished Wests Coffee Palace; and there seemed to be little life outside of that Hindley Street strip. In 2010 the immediate surrounds to our original and incidental office (we considered moving several times) host an array of arts and entertainment and educational institutions in addition to those previously mentioned. The Jam Factory, The MRC, Fowlers Live, AIT Arts, TAFE's Light Square campus…

dB Magazine has seen and been part of much of this renaissance, being a proud sponsor of events such as the West End Music Festival, Coopers Alive, ArtWest, the Helpmann Academy Jazz Awards and many more.

The renewal of the West End is about much more than 'entertainment' and at its heart are the people, those who could see the potential… artists, performers, business owners and yes, developers. Finding the right mix to make Adelaide's West End vibrant an exciting sometimes seems as far away as ever, but it's a lot better than it was. Perhaps it's a case of 'if you build it they will come'.

We'd like to thank everyone that has been involved with dB Magazine over the years. We're about the last independent street press left in the country, and without the support of many other independently minded people (particularly our advertisers), it could never have happened. We're proud to be a part of the community that is the West End.

Renew Adelaide Update

After a very successful launch and a great Stateline ABC story three weeks ago, Renew Adelaide's first two projects have been thriving in their West End spaces. The Reading Room at 153 Hindley Street has been screening films and having regular Scrabble 'drop in sessions', while the Workshop crew next door at 151 have been busy filling their racks with original fashion designs. Both spaces are accessed through the generous support of George Kambitsis and the Kambitsis Group. The Adelaide West End Association and its community have also been very supportive of the project and Renew Adelaide wishes to extend its thanks to these parties.

Renew Adelaide is a volunteer run urban renewal program that places community projects and creative initiatives into empty or under-used spaces at low cost via a license to access agreement. It follows on from the highly successful Renew Newcastle model which has seen over fifty projects open in eighteen months, breathing life back into the decaying city centre. Here in Adelaide, Renew is always on the look out for new spaces that can be opened up. They can be contacted at renew.adelaide@gmail.com. For more information, please see renewadelaide@wordpress.com.

Member Profile - The IVC Room

When the International Visualisation Centre (IVC) discovered a 19th century church beneath the aging plaster of its premises in the heart of Adelaide's media precinct, they made it a focal point for their extensive training facilities. Exposed stonework combines with state-of-the-art audiovisual equipment to present Adelaide's most innovative training and function centre.

After 12 years' delivering advanced 3D animation and visualisation training and production in Australia and overseas, the IVC team had its own wish list for the perfect training facility. The custom designed centre has been designed from the ground up to make it easy to "plug and play" your presentations in the format of your choice, all in a harmonious atmosphere conducive to productivity and learning.

The centre has computer training rooms that house up to 40 workstations and seminar and function rooms that can cater to 120 people. The bar and cafe combined with the foyer and function room will handle up to 300 guests and promises a unique atmosphere as these areas are nestled inside and around the exposed walls of the recently discovered church.

Here is a place where imaginations take flight, the ideal backdrop for you to communicate your ideas in the most efficient and effective way possible. Come and see for yourself – call Michael and Sam on 1300 555 324 to arrange a tour.

Dear Evan........

Dear Evan,

What's going on around you? Are you feeling as though your little pub, God bless it, is starting to feel as though it really is at the end of the world? Will you and Chantal at the BBQ Inn be all that is left to carry on all that is, increasingly , just a memory of our communities long history on Hindley Street? Your precinct, west of Morphett St, is such a rich and important part part of Adelaide's history it has always been a vibrant area with a significant contribution to entertainment, tourism and multi-culturalism. Recently there seems to be an increase in pockets of dark emptiness and inactivit, only add to potential anti-social behaviour, particularly drug abuse and violence. The recent closure of Cargo Club and the Vodka Bar is a worrying trend.

The institutions that call the west home are important to the state and to the precinct, there are however, many ways these institutions can embrace the West End and build on its history, rather than replace it. A more inclusive approach to existing surrounding businesses, creating opportunities for future business communities and maybe even the sharing of facilities should be part of any new developments and a commitment to the preservation of the history and diversity of the West End, would help deflect any negative perceptions of this important area.

We hope, Evan, that you are not truly at the world's end but at the start of a new thriving future in the west of Hindley Street we have long called home.

Yasou!
